Sports Day 2005 - West Spring Blazes On Tracks
The final dash...
The meet had started at 1:30 in the glorious afternoon sun. Kicking off the events itinerary, were the finals of the swift but exciting 100-m sprints. The participants were ready to burn the tracks for all that was worth. Anything to outrun 7-other well-deserving gold-medal recipients. But there was only one Gold medal to be given away. Today’s race will decide who was the very best and most likely walk away with one year’s worth of bragging rights.
Up at the stadium, a mad cocophony of class cheers reverberated across the stadium floors as each class shouted their proud class slogans and cleverly composed cheers to fight for the Best Class Cheer Competition.
All eyes in the stadium were focussed on the runners down at the tracks as they readied themselves for the races. Each of them identifiable by their disparately unique class T-shirts with their classnames proudly emblazoned on everyone shirt. Despite the personal training and conditioning before today's Big Day, the butterflies in their stomachs were swirling in a mad dance. The tension could be seen in their contorted faces, each studying every other accomplished challenger, praying hard that their legs would be the swiftest today and their lungs would be inexplicably superior.
The teachers & student timekeepers were naturally fastidious about the positions in which the runners came in. The timers and position recorders would swoop down onto the tracks right after every race, then haggled amongst themselves to re-confirm the timings and positions of the individual runners. Then in unison they would retire back to their judging positions, remaining vigilant to the task at hand.
The excitement of the 100-m races were only to be matched with the class-relay races, if not more intense. The cheering and thunderous claps resonated as every class rose to their feet (some jumped) each time the red flag was flashed. Some had arrived with kompangs to add punch to their unified cheers.
The first runner relay would be off running for his Life. Every sinew and every muscle in his body taut, every breath measured, every heartbeat echoing through the mind. For a moment, the lactic acid buid up was not enough to stop them. The eyes narrowed onto the red synthetic tracks then reeling towards the team-mate ahead who was to receive the cold, hard baton. The pass made, the gasping for air starts but even then never failing to have their eyes fixated on the teamate who had dashed off for the next lap. On and on they would go until the last runner crossed the finishing line to the collective shouts and screams of classmates/supporters at the Stadium stands. The runners would exchange congratulatory hugs despite the sweatiness and searing heat. Others who had faired otherwise, would huddle together and found comfort in knowing that they had done their best.
…
4A won the Best Cheer Competition for spicing up the afternoon with a truly spirited performance matched only by their invigorating gusto.
4E walked away with the Best T-shirt design prize.
But which class won best overall? And who was the best athelete for Sports day 2005? Sta tuned.
